The Neithercut Honors’ Choir under the direction of Dennis Freeman is a diverse group of thirty, fourth through sixth grade students who learn core values such as responsibility, integrity, respect, and compassion through the medium of the incredibly cool music of companies like Plank Road Publishing.

Flint Community Schools has afforded our students a unique opportunity to experience the arts, and in return, the Neithercut Honors’ Choir has become an entity to which the District, and principal, Marcia James, can point with pride.  Students who are selected to participate each year not only must make a commitment to attend rehearsals and concerts, but also to maintain a high standard of excellence academically, signing contracts with teachers and parents that they will be responsible for any work that is missed during their time away from campus. Only students who faithfully perform their obligations in the classroom are able to participate in concerts and events.

The Neithercut Honors’ Choir is a service learning activity that affords students a unique opportunity for growth, providing them with positive attitudes, skills, and confidence that will empower each student to reach their goals.  The choir members demonstrate a level of professionalism not usually found in performers at this age.  Neithercut Honors’ Choir has three times been one of the featured performing groups for the Holiday Pops Concert at The Whiting, broadcast live on Channel 12 each year, the only elementary school group to have earned this distinction. Holiday concertgoers have been impressed by the musicality, versatility, and enthusiasm of these young musicians.

Over the years, it has been a privilege for the Neithercut Honors’ Choir to be able to showcase the Fine Arts opportunities available in the Flint Schools in this and other auspicious venues. In addition, to the Holiday Pops, this talented groups of young people have performed at Genesys Regional Hospital, Michigan State University, The State Capitol, and for events sponsored by the Michigan Reading Association, Michigan Social Studies Council, Flint and Burton Rotary Clubs, Law Day, Memorial Day, Catholic Charities, Priority Children, and CrimeVictims Advocacy Celebrations as well as concerts in many area schools, nursing homes, and other venues. Audiences everywhere have been captivated by the positive message of their music.
